Even if global warming is completely false, I still want to try and prevent it, here's why.
Watch this video-
http://my.break.com/media/view.aspx?ContentID=317652

Even if our impact on the globe is completely harmless to it, which to me seems impossible.. we take up "20 seconds" of the earth's "year" (or in other words, we have been around for .0000065% of the earth's history). And plants and animals have evolved to cope with a certain amount of change- the amount present in natural conditions- and we have been changing so much it is against the earths flora and fauna's nature to survive what we are doing to it- anyways- I am pretty ignorant about the whole thing but please watch that video if nothing else to get you thinking.

to the third poster- you completely missed my point. I don't know if it's true- the video explains why it really doens't matter- watch it homes!

Unfortunately my computer will not run the video.

However just because someone made a video does not mean that they know what they are talking about.

I am a scientist and I am thoroughly familiar with the peer reviewed scientific literature on this subject.

According to the best scientific literature on the issue of Global Warming and Global Climate Change we must reduce our worldwide emissions of carbon dioxide gas to less than one tenth of what it is today if we are to have any chance of stopping Global Warming.

If we fail to reduce the world wide production of carbon dioxide gas to less than one tenth of ehat it is today we have no chance of stopping Global Warming and Global Climate Change.

Unfortunately the only way that we can get reductions that large would be to shut down all of the economies of the world.

We probably cannot get reductions of that size in the United States. We probably cannot get reductions that size in the rest of the world.

The People's Republic of China has already stated publicly that they will not participate in any effort to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

In fact The People's Republic of China has stated publicly that they plan to increase their use of fossil fuels and output of carbon dioxde gases by some very large amounts.

The People's Republic of China alone produces enough carbon dioxide gas to cause Global Warming even if every other country shut their production of carbon dioxide gas to zero.

It is impossible to reduce our production of carbon dioxide gas to zero because we exhale carbon dioxide gas. The only way we could reduce our production of carbon dioxide gas to zero is for everyone to commit suicide.

Unfortunately the price to prevent Global Warming and Global Climate Change is extremely high. It is highly unlikely that we would ever be able to persuade our citizens in the United States not to mention the rest of the world to pay the price that it would cost to prevent Global Warming and Global Climate Change.

There are some things however that we can do that will dramatically improve the environment even though we cannot stop Global Warming and Global Climate Change.

We can stop the use of coal.

Coal is contaminated with radioactive Uranium and Thorium(1).

In addition to carbon dioxide gases coal causes some of worst environmental pollution of any of the fossil fuels.

We can use wind turbines to generate electricity. The cost of production of electricity by the use of windpower is about the same as it is for coal.

If we can manage to switch the generation of electricity away from fossil fuels then the use of electric cars will help the environment because the electricity used for the electric cars does not cause carbon dioxide to be added to the environment elsewhere.

These are come of the things that we can do to help the environment even though we cannot stop Global Warming and Global Climate Change.

Pure common sense - I like the simplicity in which he explains the possible outcomes.
People buy lottery tickets every day not knowing whether it's a scam or not, whether they'll win or not, because they believe in the CHANCE of becoming rich....
So why wouldn't people want to make some kind of effort against global warming, whether true or not, but knowing that there's a much better chance to survive?
I think everyone should invest a dollar in slowing the global warming every time they buy a lotto ticket. Consider it an investment in the future, unlike a lotto ticket, which is thrown out if not a winner.

I'm not going to watch 9 minutes off him talking. It's an over symlification of the matter. Environmentalism has created political upehavel as well. US, India Russia nad CHina are fighting over that issue. Pointing fingers and who is causign the most damage. CUtting oil usage would cause strong changes in society, like Venezuela, Mexico, Indonesia and the Arab countries. It would also move more money back to the developed nations, like US and Australia would also benefit greatly due to its uranium reserves. I think Canada, UK, France, Russia would benefit as well from manufacturing Nuclear generators. I think of the third world nations, Nigeria might benefit, but it's a wash with them, since they also a oil producing nation. One of the arguements I hear from the deniers, is globla warming is a plot to keep the rich nation rich and the poor nations poor. THe carbon cap is to prevent developing nation from building new factories. Although I always reply that there is a delay in capping CO2 emmissions for the developing nation on the Kyoto pact. Stating the worse case scenerio as a choice is a faulty type of logic, since on the Environmental side, it's over exagerated, especially when he adds that the changes are sudden and all that stuff, and he glossed over the worse case scenario on the deniers side.

Personal thoughts on the subject.
WHen I confront the global warming deniers, my tactic is different. I live in LA and I tell them, that solving the issue of global warming, even though it's false, has undeniable benefits. First it would reduce the smog in Los ANgeles. Second, it would reduce our dependency to foreign fuel
source. THese things are tangible and hard to deny. But the deniers seem to locked in a thought process and wont even discuss my thoughts.

I hope I didn't miss anything, but by the 7th minute, I was too annoyed to continue watching. I'm a product of T.V. and franly there was no commercial to break up on the speech.

Was that you?????????

There is NO "downside" to going "Green". Even if you don't like the extra EFFORT it takes- you probably could USE the exercise ANYWAY- So is it really gonna kill any of us- to recycle more, plant a tree, drive less, or think twice about how many kids we're cranking out to further pollute an already overcrowded World??! The WORST thing we can DO about Global Warming, -is NOTHING. ...-Just let it "ride..." -Until the day finally comes, when it runs over US... :)

Here's another consideration: the fossil fuels will run out in a few centuries anyway, so the economic effect of stopping the use of those fuels will happen anyway. Furthermore, it would be a good thing for the distant future to still have some fossil fuels around as raw materials.

Yes, I’ve watched the video, several times in fact, and the problem with it is that its logic is completely flawed.

Why?

Because it can be equally applied to absolutely every possible “catastrophe” that anyone can imagine.

Take religion. Many religions have an “End of the world” scenario. So, to take Christianity, Jesus will come again to judge the living and the dead, and he’ll only save the righteous. So, based on the logic of the video, we should all be going to church and doing all the things we’re supposed to do, just in case the Christians are right, because, if they *are* right, and we *didn’t* go to church, etc. then *boy* are we in trouble!

But hang on, Christianity is not the only religion that has this scenario, so we’ve also got to get involved with all the other religions too – just in case.

But hang on, to abide by the rules of most religions we need to forsake all others. Oh crumbs, now we’re in a bind, how can we possibly be faithful to all religions, at the same time? We’re going to get stuffed by the “end of the world” scenario of one of them! However should we decide which one is most likely then? We can’t! So, we may as well just commit suicide right now, because we’re all doomed anyway!

Moving on from religion, what about the possibility of an Earth – asteroid impact? That would be hugely catastrophic. Scientists think that’s what wiped out the dinosaurs. So, shouldn’t we be putting missile platforms in space to counter that possible threat?

And the list goes on and on…

AIDS, or some other disease could kill everyone on the planet.

What about terrorism?

How about the possibility of an alien invasion?

Etc, etc, etc.

Shouldn’t we be throwing all our efforts into fighting these possible catastrophes too – just in case?

Let’s face it, if you take this argument to it’s ultimate conclusion, you’d never get out of bed. It’s just too dangerous out there!

Thus, if we follow this logic, we become completely paralysed and unable to do anything at all, because we all spend our whole life worrying about all the terrible things that *might* happen.

Clearly, we can’t live our lives like this. So, we take risks every day of our lives. It’s a risk getting out of bed, but we take it because we want to *live*. Driving a car is dangerous. People *die* in car accidents, but we take the risk, because we want to live. In fact, people do the most dangerous of things (rumour has it that some people even jump out of perfectly functioning aircraft, just for fun!), because they want to *live*.

So, my suggestion would be to ignore that man and his flawed logic, and get on with your life. All the bad things that can happen in life probably *won’t* happen to you. At least not all of them and not today.

Trust me, you *are* going to die one day, but that doesn’t mean you should live your whole life worrying about how and when it will happen, or trying to avoid it. You can’t. Just accept it.

If global warming is false, then by definition, there's nothing that you can do to prevent it. If human activity isn't causing climate change, then changing human activities won't stop climate change.

A lot of things in life are false. What should we do to help these causes?

How much of your life do you plan to devote to things that aren't real?
