The base curve (BC) measures the curvature of the lens. For example, a BC of 8.3 would be "tighter" on your eye than a BC of 8.8. If the BC on a soft lens is only slightly different (+/- 0.1), you may be able to wear it comfortably. However, some people are more sensitive and may feel that the "looser" lens moves around too much when they blink. When using hard lenses, the BC is much more specific and a small difference in the BC, even with the same diameter, is much more noticeable, both in comfort and clarity.

BC/SAG is the measure of the back curve of the lens, it is similar to the concept of "size" in clothing.

And no, you can't substitute BC. Think of it like jean sizing. There is a waist size (24, 26, 28), an inseam length (30, 32,34) and fit style (relaxed, boot cut, skinny). Waist size is like BC, inseam is like diameter and brand is like fit style.

If size 24/32 skinny fits you, 26/34 relaxed will not.

The BC/SAG will always be the same. I can't find what it exactly stands for, but it's your presription. Like 5.5 left and 4.5 right. Call your eye doctor's nurse. She might know what it exactly stands for. :)
