(Is it that important to just support one driver?) Well, it sure simplifies things. During a race there are 43 cars simultaneously moving forward, falling back, making adjustments, employing different fuel and tire strategies. It's not humanly possible to keep track of all 43 in your head. I usually keep track of two, during any given race, and sorta keep an eye on a few others. More than that would be too much like work.
(What should you look for in selecting one?) Most fans go by the drivers' personalities. (Some of us geezers go more by driving style, but that's hard to get a handle on until you've been watching for a while.)
Let's see, you'll want to follow a frontrunner, at least at first. (Elliott Sadler has lots of fans, but he's really struggling this year and you won't see his car on TV much.) Which do you relate to more: suave, urbane, California, expensive wine? That's Jeff Gordon. Or shy-but-likeable, small-town North Carolina, Budweiser? That's Dale Earnhardt Jr. Those are the two most popular drivers in NASCAR today. Both are likely to be in the top 10 at any given time during a race, and get tons of media coverage whatever they're doing. Or, how about a gentlemanly veteran who hasn't won a championship yet? (Jeff Burton.) Or a very promising, very affable young driver? (Carl Edwards.)
If you can catch some of the prerace show -- it's hours long -- they always interview a bunch of drivers, and that's a way to get to know some of them. Have fun, I hope you enjoy your first race.

Honestly, it will come to you after you watch for a while. I actually started watching because of my 5 year old son. At first I really didn't like any one particular driver. As time went on, there were drivers who I realized I DEFINITELY did not like, such as Gordon and Stewart. This was basically because of the attitudes they displayed during interviews and stuff. Each week I listened to Jr's interviews and was impressed with what I heard. He may not be the greatest but he is sincere and a truly nice guy. If he messes up, he lets you know it, he doesn't blame other people. But anyway, there are a lot of really great guys to choose from. If you're basing your decision on looks, may I suggest Jr. (8, but won't be next year), Jamie McMurray (26), Kasey Kahne (9), Kevin Harvick (29) or Carl Edwards (99). If you're basing your decision on winners I'd have to say Jeff Gordon (24), Jimmie Johnson (48) or Tony Stewart (20).

Pick a driver that YOU like. Don't pick a driver just because everyone else likes that particular driver.Don't let other people's opinion's pressure you into pulling for a driver that you other wise might not of chose .
Even if they don't have a boat load of championship's and have just a few wins that doesn't mean their not a good driver. They are all good in their own right or they wouldn't be in the ELITE division of motorsports NASCAR!!!
Look at their driving skill's as well as personality and from a female perspective good looks are a bonus ;)
It also would be good to take a crash course (no pun intended )that way you can get a basic idea of whats going on

Tony Stewart & Robby Gordon While Tony has had more success in NASCAR as a driver, both of these guys can easily lay claim as this generation's A.J. Foyt. Both guys can drive whatever car they get into, and can drive even a so-so car into victory lane. Whether they drive in the Daytona 500, the Dakar Rally, Baja 1000, Indy 500, Billy Bob's Backyard horse-drawn buggy race...whatever...it doesn't matter what they drive. These two guys will be there at the end battling for the win. Now that Tony George has unified the IRL & Champ Car, he needs to bring in more high profile talent, and these two guys would be my top picks.

There are so many good drivers to watch. That is one of the reasons to watch NASCAR. On any given race day there are at least 20 teams/ drivers that are good enough to win. I like Dale Jr first and for most but I also like Tony Stewart. They always put up a good effort. The 24, 48 and 5 are also good (just tell my friends I said that). As much as I hate to admit it Kyle (flaps) Busch is very racy right now. Pick a driver for what ever reason you want, he's cute or his car looks good or what ever catches your interest. Then watch that driver every week. Listen to the post race and read the articles about your driver and before you know it,,,,, YOU are a NASCAR fan!!!
Enjoy The race Sat. regardless of who you pick. Bristol is a great way to start as a fan.

You have totally opened the door for rabid Nascar fans to lobby for their personal favorite...so now it's my turn. I was a Bill Elliot fan for a while but he is no longer competitive, or even full time. So I looked for a guy who could win but was not already a big name. Then a couple years ago this guy Carl Edwards had a pretty good season, was a nice guy, respectful of other drivers (even when a jackass like Stewart spins him out for no reason). And get this, when he wins he does a back flip off the side of his car. He is young enough that he will be around for a while and the ladies think he is good looking ...he's your guy.

Well welcome to the sport of NASCAR.
There are 43 drivers taking the track on raceday so you have your choice.I pull for Joe Gibbs Racing, but that goes back to when I meet him at a football camp.
Look at the drivers, teams, and even the sponsors on the car pick one or two and watch them or just tune into the race and get caught up in the event and enjoy it and before it is over you'll be rooting for one driver and become a fan.

I do have my favorites but not just one. IF I were to suggest a driver I would suggest a few. Tony Stewart because he knows how to drive and has the need to win. Winning is very important to him, as it should be. He also shows his feelings, not that it is always a good situation, but come on, how many people are always nice? Denny Hamlin, he is Stewart team mate. He is still young and hasnt been in cup long but he is very good. Actually, all the Joe Gibbs cars are good. And next year they will have Kyle Busch, who I dont like but he is good in his own way. Kasey Kahne is also good although he is having a terrible year. Now if you have to pick one for Bristol I would have to say Kenseth. He has won the past 2 night races at Bristol.

What kind of peole do you like? Pretty, successful ones? Hendrick is your group, take your pick(Gordon/Jimmie Johnson) . Strong aggressive types that are also good drivers than Gibbs is your team ( Hamlin, Stewart, Kyle Busch), same could go for Kurt Busch. If you are a slow and steady kind of person then you can go with Roush ( Kenseth, Biffle, Edwards and McMurray). Or you could go with half teh other fans and take Junior. The number 8....
