In Boxing should i go for the head first or the body

To the head if you want to quickly rattle the opponent. Although a well placed body shot will do this. If you want to try and tire the guy out and take his legs away, then to the body it is.

You should go for whatever is open for not only damage purpose, but also effective scoring. Keep this in mind though, if your opponent is a high energy fighter, meaning does a lot of movement and quick, then you may want to wear out the body to slow him down in later rounds. Don't make yourself known for going after a certain spot all the time or first, because you'll become predictable. Mix up your punches with varies combinations to the body and head.

You should mix up your rhythm and go after both. But I think this is what you are looking for in an answer:

The body is where the most damage is. A guy can get hit in the head all day and shake it off. He'll just back out for a few seconds, and come back in fresh. A well placed hook to the body will leave him hurting for a while. You land the same punch to the body twice (with force) he'll go down.

Just remember, he'll be hurting. He'll either show it and try to back away (go after him hard) or he'll come after you hard with a right (to try and show he isn't hurting, but he is). If he comes at you, slip outside the punch and throw another shot to the body. He'll probably go down.

Don't be a headhunter!

I usually go for the body in the early rounds because it is not moving as much as the head. Body shots makes the opponent tired in the later rounds and he will not move as much making it easier to go for the head. His hands will start to drop, which also makes the head an easier target.

i like going for the body, when the body falls so does the head. If you ever been hit with a good body shot then you know it sticks with you for the entire fight and maybe weeks later. A good kidney shot will give you the feeling that your choking on your lung. It even can paralize you for a few seconds. You cant shake off a good body shot. Head shots make you dizzy, but you either get KO'ed or you shake it off in a few seconds. Body shots hurt and intimidate any fighter. Plus if you go for the body early in a fight it takes their legs out later, and makes it harder for them to breath. Which in turn makes them weaker and much less effective. Basically makes them easier targets. Look at fighters like Micky Ward, Cotto, Hatten, Castillo, youll see how they systematically break down their opponents to the body and notice how easier they are able to get to their opponents later in the fight.

all the answers given so far are good. My personal feeling is it depends on how accurate your punches are & what type of boxer your opponent is. When i coach the more experienced boxer i like a combination of left hook to body , straight right to head finished with left hook to to head, with this the body acts as a natural spring putting max power to head shots. This does also depend on stance ( orthodox or southpaw)

Body shots leave the head open for punches. If you see any body part open for a punch, go for it. Doesn't matter where you start. All hits count.
