My now almost 5 year old knew the song by 2 more or less without skipping any letters. By 3 1/2 he could recognize all of the letters and sounds. My now 11 yr old was not so quick about it. He really wasn't too interested. He was more like 4 when he learned all the letters (His favorite letter was 'lmnop')and 5 when he could recognize them all and the sounds. My 11 year old is a straight A student so I wouldn't read too much into it. Different kids learn at different paces.

my oldest daughter was just over 2 when she knew the whole alphabet and speaking in basic but full sentences. My two sons and next oldest daughter, I don't know because I gained custody of them past that age. My 4 year old knows it. But my two year old is still learning, she knows by heart about 20 letters and the other ones we have to remind her about but then again she is bilingual and is learning at a slower rate.

I started right away--occasionally singing the alphabet song to him from newborn on up, and playing with and naming letters as soon as he could pay attention.
He could recognize and name all 26 capital letters by 16 months old. He's just over 2 now and can also name about 75% of the lowercase letters. He can pretty much recite the song, except he tends to skip completely over J-K-L-M-N-O-P. So, I started right away, but at this point we're still working on it.

My oldest was about 1 1/2 when he knew most of his letters, but he still can't get the entire alphabet song right just yet (he just turned three).
A friend of mine has twin four year old nephews who could sing the alphabet song at about 3, but couldn't recognize each letter on it's own perfectly at four.

i don't have a child yet, but i'm pretty sure I was 2 or 3 when my mom taught me the alphabet. I don't really remember.
i learned how to read very early, before I was 4.

We started singing the alphabet to him when he was a baby, then when he started speaking I would have him repeat after me "a" "a", "b" "b". I think he was just under 2. However, he's a very articulate boy (speaking in full sentences, very clearly, at 2), so don't base it all on him.
