A 14 year old girl stayed the night at my house who said her parents had her get baptized Mormon once, then they had her get baptized regular Christian once, then they took her to a different Mormon church and had her baptized Mormon again, and then to another regular Christian church and had her baptized regular Christian again. Then they turned non-religous on her. She said they confuessed her. She don't want to be Mormon but I think it's her parents fault for confuessing her and Switching all the time on her. She wouldn't be considered an apostate, right?

I would usually use the word "apostate" to describe someone who purposely turned away from what he/she once knew to be true. It sounds like the girl you described probably never had a strong testimony or understanding of truth, so I wouldn't worry about labeling her with any terms. I certainly hope that this girl will find support and guidance that will help her go in the right direction.

I wouldn't worry so much about whether people are "apostate" or not. No matter what place people are in their lives, there is almost always the possibility that a person can repent, improve, and become happier.

If you're baptized into the Mormon church and then baptized into another church, you never have to get baptized into the Mormon church again, even if you want to be Mormon again at some future point.

As for being considered an apostate, apostates are people who were once Christian but now preach against Christ, so no, she's not an apostate, not according to Mormons or anyone else.

She's not an apostate. An apostate is by definition, the formal renunciation of one's religion. In a technical sense as used by sociologists without the sometimes pejorative connotations of the word, the term refers to renunciation and criticizing one's former religion. An old, narrow definition of this term refers to baptized Christians who leave their faith. ... This girl did nothing like this. She just had parents who couldn't figure out what religion they wanted her little girl to be. However, Mormons are only baptized once. I'm wondering if she's exaggerating a little.

No she's not. Her parents sound confused. Besides, I don't think she could have been baptized that many times without a GOOD reason. Once they are baptized and confirmed a member, they are on church records and it doesn't need to happen again.

She certainly would be confused about religion after all that yo yoing! Is the Mormon church she was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints? You know the REAL Mormon church? :)

If she is not attending church & she still has an active membership (meaning her name was never removed from the records of the church) she would fall into the category as a less active. Technically this is apostate when you fall away from the church & your attendance. Be her friend, be a good example, pray for her & she will figure out what path to take for herself.

The only people who could even come close to be considered apostate are those who verbally denounce the church to other people who were once active members. It's not uncommon for this to happen. There are several people who could be considered apostate one here. Especially those who bash Mormonism and always say "I was once a Mormon" or "Ex-Mormon" or something along those lines. I've been to a Baptist church, I don't agree with it, but I don't bash it.

This young lady is confused. Her best bet is to get on her knees and pray for guidance. You can pray for her too. You can also ask her if she would like to pray with you.

Good luck!

I'm wondering if maybe she wasn't taking you for a ride...

What Mariah said is true....you only get baptized once in the Mormon church. And the apostate label doesn't really apply here...

good grief, not at all.

"apostate," in pretty much any religion, refers to someone who willfully and knowingly speaks or acts in open opposition to the religion.

In Mormon culture, someone who is baptized but does not attend meetings or engage in the church is sometimes referred to as "inactive," meaning they are not an active participant in church-sponsored meetings and events. This is probably a more relevant term.

To be apostate, one must have believed at one time. If she was never converted to the Gospel she can't be an apostate.

I think her parents will have to answer for all the confusion they caused her. Hopefully this young lady will discover a path on her own.

It sounds like she is confused and doesn't know which way is up. At 14, it can be a confusing time of life as it sits.
