I think that the violin expresses a whole range of emotions, but it is certainly capable of representing sadness with dignity and elegance. I have always felt that music is the expression of emotion without the encumbrance of language. You are very astute to recognize that in this fine instrument.

Actually, being the smallest member of the string family, the sound of the violin are actually the happiest of the lot! You should check out compositions like Vivaldi's Four Seasons Spring. The violin's certainly very happy in that one!

Or you could compare the sound of the violin to that of the other members of the string familiy, which sound even sadder than the violin.

Of course, as with many instruments, the way you play it, as well as the emotions that the musician is experiencing while he/she plays the violin, does affect the sound's happiness or sadness. There are many ways in which you can switch your technique so as to produce a different mood.

Maybe you just happened to hear the sadder piece(s).

Maybe you listened to only one tune and it was a sad one.I think the 'music' the violin can be made to produce is heavenly music.BUT if you are speaking of 'sounds' ;the violin can produce all sorts of sounds -jarring, smooth, sad -various types of sounds. It is certainly not limited to sad.And by the way other musical instruments, including the voice can also be made to sound happy, sad full of glee etc.It all depends on the mood the artist wants to create.

it can be sad but it depends on what sort of music is being played.what sort of music have you been listening to ? The violin is a very expressive instrument and musicians and composers love giving slow and sad music to the violin because very few other instruments can express such a depth of human emotion..

I think the violin is a very expressive instrument and can evoke great sadness as well as great joy. I believe this expressiveness is what propelled the violin to the forefront of orchestral music.

I agree with MommyM Violin IS almost a cliche for sad songs (I.E. When you are complaining or telling a sad story and someone says "Oh, I'm playin the worlds smallest violin" and they move their fingers against their thumb....cliche...) Violin songs usually are more somber.

You need to listen to or identify a lot more fiddle music. A violin can be played sad or with the fire and bounce of a banjo.

It depends on what is being played, who is playing it, and how the musician is playing. This goes for all instruments. Any instrument can produce a range of feelings and emotions.

No. I think they show lots of emotion. If you feel they produce a sad sound and you don't like it, try to make a different sound. Like the sound of happiness. Good luck!
