They're equally important. The best driver can't get to the front in an inferior car, and a mediocre driver can't get the most out of the best car. That's been proven in those cases where two drivers share a car over the course of a season.
Last year Mark Martin and David Ragan shared the #6 Truck. As far as I know they used the same crew etc. for every race. Martin started 14 races and won 6 of them, with an average finish of 5.6. Ragan started 19 races, won none, and achieved an average finish of 16.2. 'Nuff said.

I think Scoob has it nailed. Bobby Labonte may be an example of this. He was Gibbs' golden boy until Stewart came long, and then look what happened. Now he's with a below average Cupt team and he runs middle of the pack.
Yet- look what happens when he races for Harvick in the Busch series.
Earnhardt was great. He could win in garbage, but ran mostly as he built up money in good cars. Stewart and Gordon have won in lousy cars, but most days run in good cars on good teams.
Now put Elliott Sadlerin in an HMS car and see what happens. OR turn it around and put a slightly above average guy like Clint Bowyer and put him in a Red Bull car. Mark my words, I think the results would be different on most days.
Was that clear as mud? Maybe Scoobie's answer was better.

It is mostly the driver. If you consider that most of the top drivers belong to multiple car teams, and they tend to share information, then you'd have to conclude that each driver would be ranked relatively close to each other. Unfortunately most teams and drivers don't like the same setup so it puts the owness on the drivers/crew to rise to the top.

I think it is a combo of everything but worlds greatest driver can't win in a crappy car. On the other hand a decent driver can win in an awesome car.

Scooby is right, you can't win with a bad car no matter who the driver is. And a good driver can't win with a really bad car.

Last I checked, there was not "I" in Team.
Are you going to win with a loose oil line, bad pitstops, or a wrecked car? No.
