no that wont hut it at all meal worms are a good source of protein if any thing you did the rat some good they eat all sorts of things like that in the wild their diet is seeds and grains do not feed it any candy or chocolate or let a cat play with it that will kill it for sure i feed my hamster sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds+ hamster food and once in a wile i give a cheese cracker give it some more meal worms and try some of the things i feed my hamster i am sure your rat will love it too i also had a Fancy mouse and it ate the same stuff i feed my hamster holler

I've fed my rats mealworms before, it's not a problem at all. I personally wouldn't feed live bait to my pets but that's just my own ethics, I gave them the dried type.
The only advice I would give is limit the amount you give them as too much protein will give you a fat rat ;o) but every now and again as a treat won't hurt them.

The real problem is - where did you get a meal worm? If they are crawling around your house, the rat is the least of your problems.

Mealworms are fine for your rats as a one off treat now and again, but they're a bit fattening for every day.

As for the other person who said feed them anything a human would eat - especially nuts, nuts actually cause nasty skin problems in rats if fed too often.

I've known people who have given their rats an occasional mealworm so it's apparently ok. I've read that they eat bugs sometimes in the wild, as do mice & I've heard that some companion rats will 'stalk' moths or other insects if they get the chance.

It's perfectly fine, considering that bugs are part of the diet of wild rats.

What I would do, is not allow your rat to eat live mealworms though. I've heard crazy things about feeding live, so I've always drowned the mealworms first (I feel bad, but I wouldn't want to risk any harm to my critters)

Giving your rat meal worms is fine, but I don't suggest you give him bugs alot. Although rats eat them in the wild, they sometimes carry harmful parasites.

Of course its ok! Rats eat crickets and all sorts of bugs. Hakuna Matata? They're a good source of protein! They also love chicken leg bones (splinters removed), which also help wear down their teeth!

Rats will eat anything. They're like humans that way--bits of pork chop or hotdog, salad, cashews, dried strawberries and bananas, cheese puffs, ANYTHING. Basically, you should feed them whatever a normal, healthy human would eat--but especially fruits, vegetable, and nuts.

Meal worms are acctually very good for your rat- high in protien, and nutrients. I know its gross, but you aren't hurting your pet at all.
