Exercise caution between May and October (clean out dark parts and gills).

Go at very low tide.

Check with the Dept. of Health Services biotoxin hotline; the clams are occasionally affected by toxins.

And Pismo doesn't have the huge amount of clams that it used to.

Nov. thru April. Unless the population has increased, and I believe it must have by now the famous Pismo Clam was actually somewhat scarce in Pismo beach. But that was 20 yr. ago. Be sure to look up the regs. for clams before you go. They are online, page 47.There is a size limit for some clams. It is a fun time though.

You better check when you are aloud to, because you can get in big trouble for doing it in the wrong time of year. Then the last few years they have not allowed it because they have not been safe to eat. So you have to check with fish & game.
