Because when you burn it, there are biproducts released. One of them is sulphur dioxide which is unhealthy to breathe. Another is carbon dioxide which is a greenhouse gas that's responsible for most of the current global warming.

Start with the mining. Coal mining creates huge amounts of waste material that is very environmentally unfriendly - decreasing land values, contaminating ground water and polluting whole watersheds.
Follow with air pollution - both from coal dust and from burning the coal. The cleanest "clean coal" produces significantly more air pollution than the dirtiest petroleum and most coal plants do not meet the latest environmental standards.
Top with greenhouse gas production, from methane in the mining process to the generation of more CO2 per kilowatt than any other fossil fuel.

Coal is abundant, and it is relatively cheap to extract and burn. That is because most of the costs aren't paid by those who extract and burn it, but by the rest of human society in health and environmental effects.

It is the dirtiest fuel. It has more carbon than oil or gas and so makes more carbon dioxide when burned. It also has traces of sulfur, mercury, and radioactive elements that get released into the air when the coal is burned.

When you burn coal, you releas several tons ofCO2 into the atmosphere for every ton of coal you burn. That can't be filtered out, as can other coal-based pollutants.

afraatta437--no pollution control can "remove"the CO2--that's what's left after you burn coal and remove other pollutants. You CANNOT remove it. Check your high school chemistry, for Pete's sake.

it is a dirtier fuel, but with the pollution control devices currently in use (which the others don't mention i.e. half truths)
it really isn't as bad as they make it out to be.

the pollution controls installed on coal plants can remove up to 90% of the SO2.

PLEASE DON'T FALL FOR THE LIES!

edit:

crabby, where did say it removed C02?

sounds like you need to finsh up night school so you can get that GED.

It's great for the environment if left where it belongs.
The trouble is it is full of chemicals that pollute.
Most are also carcinogenic.
