Look up Preterism, Amellinialism, Dispensationalism, and the Mysteries of Eleusis. That should give you a good overview of most interpretations. The early Church was partial-preterist.

The book of revelation is the shock of the writer after the Romans destroyed Jerusalem and Jesus was not there to stop it. Revelation is a poem of despair. Many Christians back then thought that Jesus' 2nd coming would be sooner than later. Jesus talked in terms of Centuries and not in terms of decades..

It is the best most comprehensable analyisis of the Bible book of Revelation I have read.
I have read many other Commentaries on Revelation, but these guys seem to have nailed it.
