I thought it was at age 8, my mom seems to think it's at 12. What is proper etiquette?

O my goodness! I haven't heard that term used to address a little boy for 60 years. When I was in boarding school, mail sent to boys was addressed to "Master" so and so.These were addressed to pre teens. I would be suprised it it is still done any more, at least not in the US.

I would say 12. Would you call a 9 year old mister or sir? It signals a bit of maturity, and the start of adolescence makes sense to stop calling a boy master.

I believe that calling a young man Master ends upon his marriage. However, I would use the title Mr. once he reaches the age of 21.

I have never addressed a boy as "master" and never will. There is no reason at all to do so. That sort of ranking disappeared after WWII.

It's so old fashion. I would just write their names eg. Tom Jones.
