Why are people obsessed with tattoos?

What makes someone want to have pictures drawn on their skin? Is there no other way for these people to express themselves?

Yes there are other ways of expression-- but this is the person's *choice* of expression. The way that they *want* to express themselves. Just because someone has a tattoo doesn't mean they're "obsessed". Just because you have a blue shirt in your closet doesn't mean you're obsessed.

I'm an artist, and I want a piece of my art of my skin forever. It will be with me my whole life-- why does that bother you so much? It's my unique design.

Different people like different things. If you don't like it, you are allowed to look away. Oh...and anyone that breaks up with someone based on their looks-- not who they are-- is shallow. Breaking up with someone for a tattoo is like breaking up with someone because the color of their eyes.

Like what many have said here, it's just one way of many to express one's uniqueness. Even though a tattoo itself is not unique, the design is to the person. I designed my own tattoo and it hold meaning for me and not much for anyone else. It can be an obsession and some people do get tats in a collection manner, but everyone is different.

It's art, there many ways but this is what best suites us. Tattoos aren't for everyone, if you like them you like them if not then don't worry about it. We do express ourselves in many ways, tattoos are the permanent expression. Those "pictures drawn on our skin" usually mean something special to us.

It's not a matter of there being "no other way for these people to express themselves"... There ARE other ways to express yourself... It happens that tattoos are the method some people have chosen. Tattoos, like the clothes we wear, the cars we drive, the music we listen to, the color we paint our houses... each is a facet of our individuality (or adversely, our lack thereof!)
As individuals, we each have our opinions about others motives...
Personally, I adore artistic tattoos (while canned flash screams "I don't have an original thought in my head")... SUV's scream "I'm making up for emotional (or size related) insecurities... White houses scream "Conformity at all costs!"
I KNOW people who scratch their heads at the way I do things, just as I do about them... but that's the great thing about it... we are all different, and we all bring SOMETHING to the table!

It's just one of the many ways there re for people to express themselves, and true they aren't for everyone, but some people like them. I guess, some people decorate their homes, and some decorate their body. I mean, I don't see the harm in it because if you get a gigantic spider tattoo on your nose, it's going to be you who has to look at it in the mirror everyday not me.

well sometimes people do that 2 express thereselves, its just something that happens on a certain moment and which they want 2 remember by a tatoo, a loved one that has died and want 2 remember them.

some people do it to be cool. others because it's a family tradtion. i would never get one because i couldn't stand to look at the same picture for the rest of my life. my suggestion is if you want a tattoo, then get a henna. at least that way it will wash away if you get bored with it, and you can always get it again!

Its not an obsession.
It's my way of showing who I am. My body is my canvas, I can decorate it anyway I want and chose tattoo's. We only live once, so live it how you want to :-)

i have three, i dont want to be a tattoed old woman. i like tattoos thats why i have them, its not to express my self. its what people like so quit bein a hater.
