I find it rather funny although I try not to show it. I think this especially happens when someone is 'new' and trying things out. Like when you start to learn how to pray, you don't know what to ask for - or how to really ask.

I think it's because of a cultural belief that magick is 'wrong' and 'evil' and all that nice stuff so if they try it once they're ready to give up and say 'see it's all a load of doodoo'.

Well, to start off with, it is my belief that all prayers are answered...not in our time, mind you, but in gods time. And when people do not get the answer that they want, they have a tendancy to say that prayers are not answered. As i have stated, this is not my belief.
As for the statement of magick not working everytime, i believe that this lies all in the intent of the spellcaster and exactly what it is that magick is being used for.
I do not believe that we should seek to control others or to try and work magick for our own selfish means...ie; love spells, money spells....i think that love is something that happens and to try to control someone elses emotions will truly backfire on you.
As for things such as money spells, i believe that we all have to be willing to work for what it is that we receive.

So I guess what i am trying to say is that prayer and magick are not all that different, and each work...not sometime, but everytime...they just do not work out the way we would always like....

Just my humble pagan thoughts

God will answer prayers if it's his will. What a human prays for and wants, many times, is not what is best or not in Gods plan for that persons life. As far as Magick don't know enough about it to "scoff" at it.

I often wonder this myself.

When I explain magick to family and friends who don't understand it I usually compare it to prayers ... I'm sure they don't believe it's the same because most of them are Christian and have been taught that magick evil ... but hopefully in time they will see how it's very much the same.

Because they don't want to believe that magick works. They want to say that spells don't work because magick is not real, yet they say that when prayers are not answered, it is "the will of god."
Personally, I think it is all a matter of focus and the energy you put into your spell or prayer that makes it work.

you don't need to go as far as magick, they scoff at any prayer of any religion that isn't theirs.

Both prayer and magick work equally well.
