I dont know really but if I guessed it would be because of a tramatic issue or an accident of some sort.... have you repressed anything in your past? I guess drugs would do it including alchol. Stress and having children could possibly have an effect too. I guess you just have to soul search to find the real reason. Maybe your brain works in a way that ... when you really need to remember something it can but after say a test when you have no true reason to understand or practice the memory it is lost... food for thought! I hope it helps.

Our memory begins to naturally decline starting in our mid-20's. Using your ability to learn (as evidenced by earning your Master's) has nothing to do with using your ability to remember.
Other things include the effects of drug use, head trauma, and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's (although I'd be VERY reluctant to suggest that was your issue.) Most likely you're experiencing the same natural memory loss we all do.

Alzheimer's disease, dementia, alcoholic brain damage, cranial swelling, tiredness, poor nutrition.
Also, if you aren't actively learning or researching what you studied then you will gradually forget the details. They are still actually in your brain. If you pick up some lecture notes from 5 years ago and read them it will kind of jump start your brain and provide you access to what you have learned. I tend to remember concepts and forget details but use these concepts and apply them to what I am learning.

Well as time goes on you gain some new knowledge and some of the old knowledge goes away. If you don't need something that you learned it goes to the back of the line in importance.
What you are experiencing is normal.
