Use your brain, literally.

Sometimes you can out wit and smart them and embarrass t hem so much in front of other class mates if you are a school student they will just stay away because they know every time you are near him he is gonna hear verbal crap from you.

This in a sense will take him down with out causing harm to anyone. OR You could carry pepper spray if it is legal and alllowed or a very loud whistle or blow horn which will draw attention and hurt his ears.

I dont suggest you go hand to hand with him until you have had a few years of training in fighting.

if you want to subdue without necessarily hurting(though if you apply adequate pressure you can seriously hurt them) or punching someone in the face i would look into a grappling art such as wrestling, judo, brazilian jiujitsu (some people say aikido but most of the demonstrations i see has the attacker use almost no resistance and only seems to work if the attacker only uses one attack)

these styles will allow you to restrain a bully with a lock or throw them to the ground and getting tossed onto concrete is no joke that alone can take a person out

First realize that it is the bully who has the problems - not you... if he (or she) is OK with themselves they don't need to get their jollies intimidating other people... Herein lies your answer... A bully will never go for someone who has confidence.. as the other answer said "they are looking for a victim" Don't be one!... Go watch for a few lessons at any martial arts school near you that's got a good reputation (look for clean mats, good attitude of teachers to the master, and especially good attitude of the students to the teachers..) Decide on one which you can afford and which is easy enough for you to get to that you can commit to it. Now go, at least 2 or 3 times a week and practice at home. Treat your do-jang, your partners, your teachers, your master and especially yourself with the respect you and they deserve.... The next time you see the bully just smile and walk away... Grief! what a waste of your valuable training time messing with such a loser! If he (she) gets physical and you absolutely can't get away - put them down; fast, hard, and completely... but of course with the minimum of physical damage... All the best...

Enroll in a martial arts class. Tang soo do and Tae kwon do are good with takedown and getting out of situtations w/o fist fighting

Sounds like what you need is Brazillian Jiu Jitsu. It can take someone down and put them out without doing any permanate damage or having to use fists or kicks. I'm a yellow belt and i already kicked someones butt with it.

Yep, just read Sun Tzu's "The Art of War" and use the principles in that book to defeat the bully without lifting a finger : P You want him taken down? Get someone bigger to do that for you: D

I guess the ones advising bjj and taking him to the ground have failed to notice bullys usually have 1 or 2 "toadies"who hang around with them who are going to play football with your head if you take down their boy.

There is no avoiding hurting him if you are going to go for it.To much is based on watching trained conditioned athletes who know how to break fall etc.

The consequences of throwing someone or taking down any one not trained in these arts
are
Concussion when back of head strikes ground
Broken bones from bad landing due to lack of knowledge hip/shoulder/elbows/neck etc.

Aikido is good if you use the wrist and arm locks aggresivly and not in the passive defensive manner usually demonstrated same for the locks of judo bjj and jiujutsu but standing .This way you can restrain him with out throwing him or taking him to the ground risking the actions of his friends or doing him permanent and probably indictable (as in being sued or charged )damage.

Avoid them. You can also confront them verbally or dismiss them with a joke. Bullies aren't looking for a fight, they are looking for a victim. Don't let yourself be one. I used to fight a lot when I was young and then someone compared bullies to a dog turd. They said that I was rolling around in crap when all I had to do was step around it. If they try to hurt you physically fight like you've lost your mind. Kick, bite, scratch, yell, whatever it takes to get away without getting hurt. Crazy is much scarier than karate. ( James Brown anyone?) Don't fight unless its to get away and only hurt them as bad as you need to to escape.

the best arts in my opinion that do not involve striking are brazilian jiu jitsu and judo. They are proven to be effective in real life situations. Especially bjj. Most mixed martial artists train in bjj so you know it must work. Also, youtube gracie jiujitsu and you'll find real fights between different styles up against jiujitsu. I'm not saying jiu jitsu is the best but its damn effective.

first of all, taking down a bully means when they're down, u punch him, making a fist fight. u will get in trouble anyways if u fight them.

if u wanna learn martial arts learn muay thai and BJJ or if u dont like the ground stick with muay thai and a little of karate or kung fu so u know joint locks and sweeps.
