I am curious to know who your rat would pick you or his cage ? My rat picks the cage everytime and i want to see if thats normal or is he just obsessed with his cage . Stand beside your cage with rat inhand and let go and see where the rattie rat ends up. Its either you or its cage.

i have 9 girls, 2 rescues that much prefer their cage over anyone, one girl that doesn't mind being handled, but prefers to be alone. all the rest love my attention and roam time. you may just have a rat that likes to be in his/her cage.
don't give up on trying to hold your rat. you didn't mention an age or the sex of the rat which would be helpful. i've heard that boys are more lap buddies where as girls tend to like to run all over the place and be nosy. give your rat some time and it may mellow with age.

Our girls have actually invented a game which they've managed to teach me: I open the large door of their cage & put my hands out, palms up. Both girls procede to climb onto my hands, run up my arms onto my shoulders, then back down & into the cage, *repeatedly*. They are obviously having a blast while they do this & it's amusing to see the expression that visitors get when they witness this.
The boys usually need a bit of coaxing to come out of their cage, but then they want to snuggle.
To a happy rat, a cage isn't a prison but a secure home.

When you put them near the cage they think you want them to go in, so that test is irrelevant. Anyways I'm pretty sure most rats are glad to be out of their cage.

All of my four rats are different...the one I raised from a tiny baby will perch on my shoulders and eventually go to sleep, while the others jump into the cage...if you think of it this way, there is food, water, and a nice place to sleep in their cage...you can get your buddy accustomed to perching on your shoulder by carrying him/her around.

My mouse's name is Jerry and my name is Tom. For some odd reason he always runs away from me and jumps into his cage/hole.
