My little bichon tore his ACL on the right leg a few months ago. They replaced the ligament, and it tore again so he had another surgery. He has been three legged for about three months and he just tore his other one today. Has anyone had any experience with both legs being injured. How do I care for him? Is this common?
Any advice is appreciated.

He is not overweight. The vet said he is very happy with his weight. We used to walk a mile every other day until he was hurt. It started because his knee cap would move out of place. The first surgery didn't work becuase the part was defective and the vet operated again at no charge. We have been doing PT and that is when he hurt himself again.

It is quite common for a dog to tear one ACL, then about a year later tear the other one. Veterinarians usually warn their clients about this. Your dog will be fine, you will just want to get him back into the vet so they can examine him, to be sure it truly is an ACL tear, and not something else. If it is an ACL tear, you will want to save up the money to get the surgery done.

I also agree with Faerie Loue...excess weight is very hard on a dog's joints. I don't know if your dog is over weight, but if he is you will want to talk to your veterinarian about the best way to get him to lose weight. If he is fit and trim, you will want to be sure he remains that way.

My lab mix tore his ACL when he was 12 and the vet said I should probably not have it repaired, because at his age, the additional stress on the good leg would almost guarantee that it would go too. So I did nothing and he was fine. I just had to help him up stairs and he was fine everywhere else. He lived for another year and a half after that.

certainly, 13 isn't that previous. If different than being 13yo, he's in sturdy well-being, specific, i could have the surgical treatment completed. Your vet is real, a torn ACL could desire to be taken care of with surgical treatment. soreness pill do not help, they only conceal up the subject and certainly, encourages the dogs to bypass approximately, to that end tearing it extra. additionally, there is yet another possiblity. because of the fact the dogs is now putting maximum of his weight on his opposite knee, he has a 50% hazard of tearing the different. Massaging does not help, forget approximately the braces. Do the surprising element, get the dogs the surgical treatment he desires. Been there, completed that. in my opinion, i does not evaluate not doing the surgical treatment and that i've got extremely does not have waited as long as you're. As you wait, arthritis is putting in and could make concerns worse.

I work for a vet and she doesn ACL surgery. I've seen this happen. Your best bet is to take him to an orthopedic surgeon for a TPLO surgery as this will give the knees the greatest amount of stability. He'll need at least several weeks of complete rest and leash walking only to heal correctly. Physical therapy will also be important for healing.

He must be terribly defective, or he is very overweight. A Bichon is a lightweight dog, do you have wooden floors or tile? That can be a problem especially if the dog is overweight. This is a very painfull condition for him,I never heard of the tendon tearing repeatedly-unless you let him run around after the surgery. I would get a second opinion on the dogs prognosis.
