There are different officer programs for different branches. Here are some:
1. OCS - College graduates, direct commission (Doctors, Lawyers, Chaplains, and a few other professionals), and current enlisted.
2. ROTC
3. Limited Duty Officer (Navy) - Someone with a College Degree in one of the specific fields can get a commission and not have to go through the OCS process. There are different rules for advancement than line officers.
4. Warrent Officers - Requirements for Warrent vary by branch. Navy requires you to be E-6 and above current enlisted.
5. ECP (Enlisted Commissioning Program). The Navy, at least, has a program that pays for you to get your degree while currently enlisted and receive a commission. There is also a program "Seaman to Admiral -21" aka BOOST, which may be the same as ECP.

There are three ways get a commission, but you have to be patient. Do 3 years of JROTC and become a Private 1st class, sign up 2 somewhat smart people and become a Private 1st class,or go to the Warrant Officer program and get through the Warrant Officer ranks (4 grades) and become an officer. What ever works, but you have to work through the ranks.

Officer:
-Military Academy (public, like West Point or Annapolis...or private, like Norwich Academy or the Virginia Military Academy)
-ROTC/NROTC - go to college, get a degree and graduate a 2nd LT in the Army/Air Force/Marines or Ens. in the Navy.
-OCS/WOCS - you can enlist in the Army (09S or 09W) ang go to OCS/WOCS after boot camp (this can be one of three programs...Service Specific Active Duty, Army National Guard State Program, or Accelerated OCS) - generally you need to have a degree or in the process of completion...you must have a BS to get past O-3 (Captain in Army/Air/Marine or LT in Navy/Coast Guard)
-Direct Commission - BS + 3 years of professional experience or MS + 1 year professional experience...this is for JAG, Drs, Nurses, and some other programs.

Enlisted:
Talk to recruiters, go to the service you want and check their website. Make sure you get everything in writing. That's the way the military works...if it's not in writing, it doesn't exist.

"enlisted" that's easy, just join .as time goes by and you become more proficient at your job you'll get promotions.
"officer"; go to a military academy or after you enlist you will be given countless tests in basic training[ at least that's the way it was back in the 60's] and if "they" think you qualify you will be offered an opportunity to go to "ocs" officers candidate school.. then if you can complete that hectic training , you come out a 1st lieutenant [ "cannon fodder" lol].
very rarely does one get a "battle field commision".
also certain civilian proffetion would atomaticaly qualify you to be an officer, doctor, nurse etc. doctors came in as "captans" back during the vn war. nurses -2nd lt.

You have to have a bachelors to become commissioned as an officer and go through OCS. To become enlisted you just go to your local recruiter's office and sign up.

To be an officer you need a 4 year degree. You need to participate in ROTC in college (or go to an academy) or go to OCS. For enlisted, you need a high school diploma or GED. In either case you need a clean record and a decent credit history (for security clearance).
