Basically just a toothache...it's hard to say how intense because that all depends on how close to the root the cavity is. If it breaks through to the root and the bacteria start eating away at it, pain can be very intense.

So your best bet is to go to the dentist, let him know where you're having the tooth pain and they'll take a look and x-rays to determine when you should get the root canal. If you go to a good dentist, it can be virtually painless. I had one done a few months ago, was very nervous, but it was just like getting a filling (takes longer). Only bad part is the novocaine shot inside of your tooth, but it's more awkward than painful. Tell your doc to be generous with the novocaine shots - mine gave me three to make sure he properly numbed the area! Good luck and keep your mouth clean!

If you are having pain or discomfort the Dentist will take
x-rays to find the problem. It can be just a filling, but if you
have had previous fillings and they need replaced then you might be looking at a root canal.

When you're tooth or teeth begins to hurt real bad then the dentist finds an infection in your tooth, you'll know you need a root canal.
