one of my friends told me today that the peace sign was really an upside down broken cross. she said that a long time ago, somebody did that on purpose and people got really angry, so they made it into a "peace" sign. is it true? if not whats the real story.

The peace sign is not a broken cross. That old story's been circulating since the 1960s, but it's just not true. It was designed as a symbol for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. The most common explanation for the shape of the peace symbol is that it's a semaphore representation of the letters N and D (in other words, nuclear disarmament).

The peace sign is the semaphore letters N and D for Nuclear Disarmament. They are displayed D first then N because semaphore signals are military and reversing them indicates anti-military. Some christians associate the peace sign as a St Andrews cross. St Andrew requested to be crucified upside down because he felt unworthy to die in exactly the same manner as Jesus. The peace sign also resembles a germanic rune which is commonly called the death rune. Like most symbols you can take your pick of interpretations.

do not believe everything that you hear.

Christians twist everything that they do not understand.
(yeah blanket statement i know,,do'nt generalize and all)

It was designed and completed February 21, 1958 by Gerald Holtom, a commercial designer and artist in Britain. He had been commissioned by the CND to design a symbol for use at an Easter march to Canterbury Cathedral in protest against the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment at Aldermaston in England.

The symbol itself is a combination of the semaphoric signals for the letters "N" and "D," standing for Nuclear Disarmament. In semaphore the letter "N" is formed by a person holding two flags in an upside-down "V," and the letter "D" is formed by holding one flag pointed straight up and the other pointed straight down. These two signals imposed over each other form the shape of the peace symbol. In the original design the lines widened at the edge of the circle.

Pangel and Yogi are correct. The 'Broken Cross' story comes about as something spread by the US military about the time of the Vietnam war, that it was a Communist sign meaning 'Victory through Infiltration'. Obviously a load of crap, but there's always people who'll believe that kind of thing. (You'll find some of them in the Politics section...)

The true story is that it symbolizes three divergent paths coming together; thus symbolizing people from different backgrounds coming together in harmony.
