When I was 17, I ran away from home and spent the next 2 years hitchhiking across the US, Canada, and Mexico. I have many wonderful memories.

I soared above the Colorado Rockies in a hot air balloon while staying in Aspen. I rafted the Arkansas River, and walked across the Royal Gorge Bridge. At 1027 feet, it's the highest suspension bridge in the world.

I've bathed in waterfalls, soaked my body in hot springs, camped under the stars, walked hot, dusty roads, and met many wonderful people.

In Mesilla, New Mexico I found 3 kittens in a garbage can. I searched for a lost dog in the gorgeous forests of Snoqualmie pass, Washington.

I've attended Mardi Gras in New Orleans, and feasted on crab boil in the bayous.

I spent only one night in a homeless shelter, and that was in Grand Junction, Colorado. I had been panhandling with some other drifters that I met, and the Palisades police picked us up. They were decent, and drove us to a Salvation Army shelter. The people I was with refused to stay, but I was happy to spend the night.

I've also seen the Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore, visited Yellowstone and Yosemite National Parks, the Florida Everglades, and so many other places I can't remember them all.

I had wanted to visit South America, but there was civil war at the time in either El Salvador or Honduras, and all that kept me from hitchhiking through Central America was the prospect of ending up nameless in a mass grave.

I've had an interesting life, and these are wonderful memories.

I just took some leave and vanished into the Smoky mountains one November, I believe it was 1999. I had a blast. All by myself...and a special someone I had a little "retreat" with up there. Ummm, yeah...good times, baby. Good times.

While not getting into too much personal detail, I didn't tell anyone where I was going, I went alone, and I rented a little cabin. It was almost like a movie how everything played out.

It's part of the world that used to be.
If you don't like it here, pick up and move somewhere else where you might like it.
The West was settled when the world was like this.
Now we have mortgages, leases, credit histories that look for and reward stability, and other things that render us immobile.
It wasn't a monkey wrench as often as it turned out to be a good thing.
I went from Virginia-Richmond area, to San Diego to reno to Vegas and back to Reno again.
I hated the humidity in VA, I liked the weather in San Diego but couldn't earn $$, I could earn $$ in Reno but HAD to check out Vegas, I hated the weather in Vegas so moved back to Reno!
And if this all goes to Hell in the USA (next time we might not avoid becoming a facist theocracy), I'll move to Canada!
