with her foot on the cushion of the diningroom chair. I said, hey, you know, You guys complain that grandpa could've made this house more comfortable and casual (it has pretty furniture but it's rattan and you can't really just sprawl on it)but he didn't, so we should respect the way it is and not treat this type of furniture as if it is casual because it's not. (her mom, my sister, thinks my parents are completely uptight. my sister has a farm and owns only cheap furniture from sears.) my neice and her boyfriend left a day earlier, not angrily, but it was uncomfortable. I feel I was rightto speak up, but maybe too reprimanding. Can anyone give an opinion here?

I think you made her feel like she wasnt welcome there. She is used to things being casual that is how she was raised. Although I dont think you did anything wrong it wouldnt hurt to give her a call and clear the air.

Since you were also a guest in your Parent's Beach House and responsible for leaving it in the same condition you found it,the only thing you could have done was ask her to keep her feet off of the furniture. If they left a day early, that is their loss.
