The largest issue with any AMC product, is not so much the running (drivetrain aspect), but more importantly, the issue of rust especially in the chassis underneath.

Rust is common in the fender wells, above the tyre openings, at the fenders, doors, sometimes at the rear windows, even under the hood at the hinges and also at cowl area where the frnt window meets the sheet metal. Roofs sometimes can develop rust, but that's less common.

The big issue is rust along the subframe rails that are welded to the body; this affects the basic structure and can make the body unstable.. its not too common for vehicles that originate in the West (California, Nevada, Arizona), terrible for cars where winter storms are common with the use of salt to clear the roads.

In the San Francisco Bay Area, decent running Gremlins without major rust do exist, and from time to time they come up for sale. Craigslist.org is a great place to find them; recently someone had a listing for 1974, that they said was rust free, but had tired paint and interior.

I once owned a 1973 Gremlin, folks had 1973 Matador. Liked the AMC stuff, who would have guessed that it would now be collectable! Oh, well, that's life. I wish you well in your efforts to find a good Gremlin. A car nut.

They are ripe for a comeback, aren't they? You've brought up a really good question. There are a lot of cars that you can find in little old ladie's garages if you hunt. A babied gremlin is certainly not one of them. It would be an amazing feat to find one that has been kept in good shape.

I actually saw one at a car show last year. It had a crowd around it. I love the "wild cherry" line of toys - they only model tacky cars that everybody made fun of. I wish I'd thought of that.

Yes they can be found a little rare but still available...

if I were to suggest one it would be the Special Levis limited edition with factory paint, and decals etc.

they were made in 1976 and are pretty rare had a special Levi's denim interior

is it possible to even find a gremblin?, I go to car shows all the time and I bet I have only seen 1 in the last 7 yrs., I can remember my sister in law had one that was a levi gremblin, it had levi-jean material interior and the outside was levi blue with white stripes and white lettered tires, it was a sharp car.

There are AMC fans out there that have them, so- yes.
If you want one you may have a long wait. Besides e-bay motors you might want to subscribe to "Hemmings Motor News". While they have an online site, subscribers get their copy before it goes on line, or on the stands.
Other then that look for online AMC Sig's to find one for sale.

If you did, keeping it running will be expensive, let alone the premium price you'll pay for that rare of a car. I'd pick something else.
