I just feel that many may be lured into a false sence of compfort in their relationship with god. i cant help but wonder how they would be acting if hard times were laid upon them. dont get me wrong to praise god is a wonderful thing but i feel music shouldnt influence the amount of love and praise we offer. is this a bad stance?

Singing and music are two different things. In the Bible we are called to sing and make melody in your heart to the Lord (Eph 5:19, Col 3:16).

No, the reason for a person coming to worship should be to worship. Not because they like the band that is playing. I have gone to churches where the whole focus was on the band, the congregation would be fans of the band playing. They would even buy t-shirts, Cd's and other band concessions. Some have what they call, " concerts " every Sunday. With out of town bands, who have local followings. I really think as far as worship goes, it needs to be keep to worship.

Personally, I love singing in church...but then I also love singing in the shower and in the car. I don't think there is anything wrong with singing as a "comfort item"...better than eating four gallons of rocky road or firing up the crack pipe *smile*.

However, I don't think it is wrong for a person to be uncomfortable with any aspect of the singing in church...I know people who are uncomfortable with any non-traditional music...a few 200+ year old hymns and an organ does it for them...me, I like a small band and a worship leader leading the worship with contemporary songs...other people like bell choirs, vocal choirs, and more. A very popular church in my town basically has a concert every service with talented singers and musicians performing contemporary rock Christian songs, light shows, and more...the audience doesn't generally sing along!

We are told to make a joyful noise unto the Lord...fortunately "joyful" isn't defined...so I say, as far as music is concerned, go with what you like.

...just make sure that you grant other people the same right to use music as a part of worship in whatever way they feel led to do so!

You are so right, it is a lot of emotionalism and God tells us to walk by our faith not our feelings. Having seen the "other side" of Christianity having been a Christian for over 60 years, it was so much more "Christian" before the music age took over. Some people must think that the Holy Spirit was just waitng for the amplifier to be invented before He could have His "outpouring". If your removed the electronics all of this would just dissappear.

Hate to say this, but I think it is a bad stance. Instead of standing around judging other people and what they need, worry about your own relationship with God.

Why shouldn't music help us love and praise and honor God????????????

IMO, music is a wonderful way for people to express themselves. Art and culture is part of what makes us human. Whether you believe in God or not, surely you must appreciate this gift we have.

And if you are concerned about false sense of comfort then why aren't you questioning the whole concept of God?

Praising God is good but sometimes a bit much with the singing.Stand up ,sit down, listen to announcements, stand up and sing some more ,sit down.Turn to your neighbor and shake hands and introduce yourself, take the offering, sing one more...holy tomatoes! let's get to the learning!

If you mean that you feel there in sometimes a lack of sincerity in people's singing, then it's not wrong for you to use your own senses.

Praising God is good... but learning and applying truth to one's self is necessary, too. I think you're right to question ceremony that does not really add to a person's spirituality... and make sure that you don't do this yourself.

When we chant the name of God (Krishn to me), by practice we are supposed to get overwhelmingly desirous of getting His grace. If we are ingenuously aspiring for that, our voices will get choked. In extreme cases, it may not be able for the person to even utter the name. Remember all the powers of God are in His name.

What we do by heart is what counts, what we do physically and in acting has no meaning. Having said that, I will hasten to add that, something is better than nothing. As you progress in this field, even feigning to be a devotee, will take you there, provided you are not giving up.
