I need to make a presentation of few still pictures and couple of moving image clips and want to add some music in the background and want to record on a DVD. whats the best free programme I can find on the internet?

Forget the Internet, If you have Win XP sp2 or higher, then use Windows Movie Maker.
Try START> All Programs> Accessories> Movie Maker
(It may be right in All Programs)
Import your media, drag & drop in timeline (or storyboard) and go wild!
