I'm buying from Journeys, the shoe store, and I'm paying with a prepaid credit card from Visa, I haven't gone to get it yet because I want the exact amount, or close to it, what I'm getting costs $59.99 with free shipping, is there tax or not? How much is it?

Your website should provide you with the total amount of the sale before you click to confirm the purchase. Don't purchase the item until you know the complete amount.

Most states have sales tax that applies to all purchases that are made in that state, but yet most states either don't collect tax on online purchases, or they just won't try to enforce it against an individual retail customer like you. You may contact your own state consumer's rights office for information on how to pay the sales tax if the website doesn't charge you.

If the company has a facility in your state, then you'll pay sales tax if your state has a sales tax, and most states do. If they don't have any actual facility (retail store, warehouse) in your state, then you won't be charged sales tax by the vendor on the sale.

If the seller has a nexus in your state (office, warehouse, store, etc.) then they must collect sales tax for your state. If they do not have a nexus in your state they do not need to collect sales tax.

Some states require online sellers to charge tax, others don't. They will have a list of the ones they need to tax.

A 1997 law banned Internet taxes but exempted businesses already collecting it .
I suspect some crooks charge the taxes then keep them .
Anyways , ask the seller , only they know .
