Pepper spray.

If she were 18 or 20 I would say a small hand gun. However being 12, that's definitely a judgment call. You have to take into considerations the laws for minors carrying weapons in your state as well as the maturity level of the 12 year old.

What else? A diary?

Some make up or other girly stuff.

Definitely though, some kind of weapon so that she can defend herself. A fingernail file applied the right way is a good weapon. So get her a good sturdy finger nail file. Not one of those flimsy kind....

house key, wallet with small amount of money, a pen, tampon or pad if she needs them or just case she or a friend has an emergency. Lip gloss, chap-stick......I carried Advil at that age, but I have migraines and have since I was about 8. : )
Normal things.

a few dollars, a hairbrush, kleenex, paper and a pen. Nothing she would dread losing, 'cause at 12, she's bound to leave it behind a couple of times before she really gets used to being responsible for it.

it all depends... maybe chap stick, pencils for school, couple of hair ties... and if she has started her cycles a pad or two would be appropriate, though a nurse would have them in school.
