I took the tour of a temple once and they can get to the rooms without seeing most everything else. Why can't nonmember family attend the wedding?

Isolde, You said, "The ordinances such as a sealing are sacred and not performed 'publicly'." I am just wondering why.

It is not just the building. The ordinances such as a sealing are sacred and not performed 'publicly'. A bishop can perform marriages outside the temple, in front of family and friends, but the ceremony and the blessings are completely different. It is only in the temple that we may be sealed for time and eternity.

Non members are allowed on tours of temples before they are dedicated to the Lord. Nonmembers and some members are not allowed in the temple once it is dedicated, since temples are the most sacred place for Mormon worship. When I was sealed in the temple 4 years ago my younger sisters were not allowed to be there because of them being too young.

The temple is a very spiritual place, and one that is for members who have committed to live their lives as much like Christ as possible. It is also somewhere that would be hard for people to understand if you were just walking off the street. There are things you have to learn before going to the temple would mean anything, or even before the principles taught would be understood.

Here is a site that answers this very question.

No individual is allowed into the temple without a "temple recommend" regardless of church membership - which excludes some members abd all non-Mormons from attending temple weddings.

They can attend the reception later or even they can attend a civil marriage if the couple chooses to be married civilly than in the temple and be sealed a year later.
