I take it you mean to see if they are genuine and not some pervert. I do not think it can be done without meeting in a public place and them a private eye to follow. Expenssive

You can do it yourself easily. I know it is a bit dishonest, but when my ex and I were first separated by different countries after college, I created a false profile on msn. I found a pic of a really hot model and made up info ( I made sure via the web that false info was also accurate, just in case) and sent him an im; I told him I found him by browsing through the profiles. I asked him getting-to-know-you questions, and told him that I was having a hard time b/c I broke up with my boyfriend, blah blah blah. I asked if he had a girlfriend, and, what do you know, he started describing me! I was so happy. Just to keep him in check, I checked in with him every now and then with the fake profile. He never found out.

P.S.
We broke up b/c we decided we were better off as friends.

best way is to meet in a nice open place, if you can tell them to bring someone and you bring someone (not "bring another girl for my mate" or she'll be on the phone to the cops) and just remember their is a good chance the person your going to meet is equally as aprehensive as you are... doesn't always work out like the TV says, I met one of my closest friends through the interweb and through him I met the most amazing girl, so its not all bad, just be safe and stuff
