I doubt it. I can't see that applies to anyone who starts or is a member of what some term secret societies.
People seem to forget that men like George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and Voltaire were Freemasons. Would you say that applies to them as well.

No, but I suspect that those who criticize lodges and other secret societies the most are people who
1) feel disappointed that they aren't part of a group and are envious of people who know something they don't,
2) have no concept of aesthetics, ceremony and ritualized expression in general (usually because they're too unorganized to take part in such a thing themselves), and
3) are often incapable of socializing with their own gender.
