Oh so many wrong answers here. You better check them out with a real encyclopedia (not wikipedia.) The child languages of Latin are: Italian, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Romanian. English is not one of Latin's child languages, but more than 60 percent of English words are of Latin origin.

Languages Derived From Latin

2016-10-05 11:14:44 · answer #2 · answered by Erika 4 · 0 0

Okay, No, People, 60% of English isn't Latin. Actually even if it were 60% French, which it's not, it still wouldn't be 60% Latin due to what.....The FRANKISH (Germanic language that mixed with Latin to make French) influence.
Also we have influences from North Germanic, Celtic, Greek, and many others, although West Germanic is the true origin of the language. In fact there is a reason that English is not a Romance language, but rather a West Germanic one.....

Okay, Now the major 5 are as follows:
Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, French, and Romanian.
Others include:
Catalan, Ladino, Romansch, Galician, Lombard, Gallo, Norman, amongst so many more.

English is NOT derived fom Latin, it is a Germanic language with a lot of Latin and French borrowings.

Spanish, Portugese, Italian, French and Romanian are the "big five" of Romance languages, i.e. derived from Latin.

There are also many smaller languages such as Catalan and Sardinian.

There is Latin, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Romanian, which I hope to have learned by next year. There are, however, many other languages that others have mentioned here such as Catalan and Ladino. I have studied Latin for one year at school (working on second), I have completed Wheelock s Latin (which answers this question in its introduction) and I ve been working with some Romance Languages (Italian, Spanish, French.) I hope this thoroughly answers your question.

Romance Languages List

Although English is more than 60% derived from Latin, it is NOT one of the Romance Languages. The Romance Languages include: Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Catalan (you know, those "original" Spaniards, living in the highland desert area in the northern part of Spain, many of whom still herd sheep and live pretty much as they did for centuries; they also always want to form their own country).
However, SSA and other Governmental agencies also consider Haitian Creole as being a separate language.
