Why has it come back, this is at least the 4th time i have been depressed. Do I keep taking the tablets? I'm not sleeping, not working, Can't be arsed with life and everyday things. Family don't really understand and treat me like a hopeless child. Is there a single cure? Is there something I can do for ME? Without the pills?

Well, I subscribe to the theory that anti-depressants should not be used to tackle depression directly. If you don't establish the cause, the tablets will only mask the problem - it will still be there, ready to bite at you. We live in a society which hands out anti-depressants like sweeties.

I have had depression for numerous years due to the fact I have had major health problems, including 7 major operations on my bowel. However, I KNOW my depression is related to the burden of my physical health problems so I don't take anti-depressants. I try to do things that I know I like and give me a buzz - a gentle stroll with my dog, a sing-along to my favourite song, etc.

Being trapped indoors a lot with my pain, I also know the same old rountine drives me insane. Is this the same for you? Maybe it's a case of trying to break your routine. Maybe go swimming, catch a movie, a go for a long walk and appreciate nature. Walking actually has psychological benefits - not only does it break a normal routine but it also releases endorphins feel-good hormones naturally produced by your body.

I know it's easy to say all these things and you may feel it is useless. However, sometimes one needs to give oneself a real push - start looking for what's really bothering you and try to see how you make changes in your life that will make you feel a little less apathetic.

I wish you luck xxx

I have always found psychotherapy the most helpful, it is another persons insite and finding the origins of the problem can often give you a better grasp on things, meaning you are more equipt to fight back.

Pills can help to mellow things, but havent found they cure anything.

Making sure you have a social circle is another issue- you forget how much you need support till something like this happens, have you tried support groups for depression in your area- dont knock it till you have tried it and given it a real chance, not just a single session!

Try getting better bit by biut step by step, it wont come over night, I think you must be aware of that. You need to wirk on finding life worthwhile, often this means finding yourself worthwhile and trusting your gut instinct, making friends and meeting new people, building new skills such as college and stuff at work.

I know all of this stuff will seem quite a bit far and beyond what you feel able to cope with right now, but keep on going as it will get better and easier as you go along, and it will help.

One more thing that definatly helps is excercise- you will like the above, have to really push and force yourself to do this- when I was depressed and forced myself to excercise, I started inadvertantly crying, it felt so much not like how I felt I felt I was even more alone in my depression and that my life would be an endless up hill battle, but after I came out I felt better, even if it was for a little bit and even if it wasnt totally better, I also felt a sense of achievement, so definatly worth it in my book!

I've had depression 4 times and am still fighting it now, unfortunately once you've had depression once you are more prone to it that's what the doctor told me. from my experience the tablets usually just give you a boost enough to cope a little better but they don't solve the cause of your depression that has to come from you, you have to work out what it is that makes you feel down and if you can practically do something about it, if you are stuck on this then seeing a counsellor will help you realise what the problem is and they will help you find ways to cope and solutions for this good luck

I so much wish I could give you a great, positive answer, but I am like you, am now 56 (male) and have been treated for endogenous depression since I was 11. It's a curse, but I try to see it like diabetes, etc. However, mental problems can be really terrible. I would so much rather be physically ill than mentally ill. BUT I have got this far, and so can you. I was an English teacher for years and years, and I knew every novelist and poet who was a suicide. Sensitivity can be a sort of curse. But don't flay yourself. You and I just have to hang on in there! I take pills first thing every day, if that's what it needs, then so be it. You just hang on to life. Believe me, you WILL learn how to manage it. YOU WILL.

you need to find out the cause of why you are depressed before you can help it. people dont generally help you out much do they when you're down? because they just think you are being melodramatic and are just a *bit sad*.

I find little things to look forward to, treat myself to a little thing everyday, just like a walk in the park with my dog at a different time than i would normally go, or my favourite meal, or rent a dvd i have wanted to see for ages...do things for YOU and you only....then tryto figure out the next step to finding your happiness again....my downfall is usally my job!

i find tablets are useless, they numb the pain for a while or send you loopy. But they never sort out the reason why you are depressed. unless you have been like it all your life of course. but most of us with depression just go through patches. IMO pills are a waste of time. Sort out whats REALLY going on in that mind of yours to make you depressed in the first place.

hope this helps

I have anxiety and depression and have been trying an alternative therapy called Emotional Freedom Technique and it has really worked for me and helped me a lot. Since using it I have been feeling a lot better. It's very good at getting rid of all kinds of negative emotions and dealing with all kinds of issues quickly. It does sound bizarre but does work. Might be something that can help you.
