According to an Islamic point of view, which Im inclined to follow not merely because it is my religion but because it seems to be the only thing that makes sense:
Prophets were chosen by God to relay a message to their people (who were at the time, behaving in extremely unreasonable and inhuman ways)
These prophets, were somewhat a last resort from God, to teach people their humanity, the ones that they had forgotten over the course of years.
How these prophets are known depends on two things:
1- That they would receive messages directly through the angel Gabriel, or God. (these are not inspirations)
2. That they would be example human beings, that would be like beacons of light in the midst of the corruption and inhumanity that had befallen the land.
Some of the last prophets of God, particulary the important ones, had receive what the Quran calls: revelations that needed to be written down.
These arent just 'inspirations'. But actual word for word orders from God.
The prophet, now being more than just a relayer of prophecy, would directly relay these orders to the people, and make sure they were written for the future generations to follow without being corrupted.
Jesus was among those men who had several revelations given to him. He was ordered to relay these to his people and he was to make sure they were written down by scribes.
But currently, there is no one book that has the entire teachings of Jesus from his mouth, with authenticity.
This is very unfortunate. Even as a Muslim, I would like to know exactly what Jesus has said, not what other men understood he said.

God himself has set up a standard to guard the people against false prophets. If the thing the prophet spoke of did not come true, he would be stoned. Drastic, but to the point.

Who really cares about the bible and what happened before it...
What really is important is what you do with Your Spirituality.
As Today's Prophet, I direct people to DO this (and when You've completed this, You'll know that I'm a True Prophet):
Create Your Relationship with Our Creator
and have UnConditional Love and Peace in Your Life.

Believe it or not, Jesus did not present us with a book called the Bible. He established a church, founded on the Apostles. He gave His authority to them. It is through the church that the Bible came. Just as the books of the Bible were discerned by the authority of the successors of the Apostles (late 4th century), so too were prophets discerned.

The Word says that if a single thing a so-called prophet says does not come true then he is a false prophet.
Deu 18:22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that [is] the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, [but] the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.

Deut 18:
20 a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded him to say, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, must be put to death."
21 You may say to yourselves, "How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the LORD?"
22 If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the LORD does not take place or come true, that is a message the LORD has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously. Do not be afraid of him.
Deut 13:
1 If a prophet, or one who foretells by dreams, appears among you and announces to you a miraculous sign or wonder,
2 and if the sign or wonder of which he has spoken takes place, and he says, "Let us follow other gods" (gods you have not known) "and let us worship them,"
3 you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. The LORD your God is testing you to find out whether you love him with all your heart and with all your soul.
4 It is the LORD your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him.
5 That prophet or dreamer must be put to death, because he preached rebellion against the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt and redeemed you from the land of slavery; he has tried to turn you from the way the LORD your God commanded you to follow. You must purge the evil from among you.

If his prophecies came true then he was a true prophet, if not then he was considered a false prophet and no one listened to him. However, no one ever wanted to listen to the real prophets either.
