Drug use leads to drug abuse when the drug is addictive . It doesn't matter whether it is prescription or street drugs. No drug use that changes the way you act and feel can be okay. As you build tolerance........you will need more of the drug. Before you know it.......you are an addict. Going through withdrawal is horrible. You can't think straight or focus, the spasms in your muscles become so severe it can be dangerous. The sweating and the need for the drug is excruciating. There is no acceptable level of use as it will always lead you to heavier drug use and dependence. Then the drug will control your whole life and people will do anything, even kill or steal to get their "fix". It's best to avoid it all together and save yourself from the heartache and pain which will eventually kill you or if you are lucky .....you will be admitted to a Psych hospital or a rehab Center. That can be lonely and frightening. Many relapse so many times before they remain off the drug. Also another drug such as Methadone will have to be given so the withdrawals don't kill you. That's the cycle that we should all want to avoid.

the only drugs that are OK are prescribed by a doctor or brought over the chemist counter to correct something that is wrong with you, the use of drugs for recreation is abuse to your body

No they don't, drugs OF abuse, ignoring appropriate medical indications, are by definition abused as soon as you use them. Also of course the sort of attitude you have, its OK for me to use a little bit it can't do me any harm, is typical of people who think they are immune from running in to addiction problems. You are wrong.

Drug use would surely be OK if it's for legitimate medical reasons, and NOT for reasons of self-indulgence. That's the only USE that should be acceptable. Obviously, this discounts the use of all illegal substances.

I thought that the term Abuse when used in the context of drugs was the shortened term for abnormal use.

Certain drugs AREN'T okay. Methamphetamines, for example, are an illegal drug. As well as cocaine, heroine, crack, and all that other stuff you hear about frequently.
