I'm fifteen and went to the dentist today and was told that I have periodontal disease in my mouth. The dentist told me I need to have a deep cleaning done, or I could be without teeth by the time I'm 25 years old. He said that he wasn't going to do it due to the fact I'm so young and recommended that I see a specialist. My parents are going to take me to a specialist withtin the next few days. My question is will this "deep cleaning" be painful? And what is exactly done?

They should numb you up for the deep cleaning. It basically done the same way a normal cleaning is done but much more thoroughly, methodically and naturally more deeply.

A couple factors may be putting you into a greater risk category: diabetes? smoker?

The specialist should give you instructions on home care. Become a clean freak. You'll save money by preventing further problems, you will be healthier once you get rid of the inflammation in your mouth and oh! did you know? Girls think guys with good oral hygiene are HOT.

it depends on how bad our periodontal disease is. my sister and my mom both have it.. my mom has a severe case of it and there going to have to peel back her gums all the way and scrape her bones... major surgery.. my sister had to get her gums pulled back just a little but not even as much as my mom

It will be a little sore but nothing to worry about. They may have to numb you up for some parts of the procedure but that's about it.
