I have done this for a friends wedding - she had a very small budget and really couldn't afford much at all - we did the flower girls and the table decorations using margarine tubs.

Using a margarine tub means it is waterproof too!

You can cover the little girls margarine tub with fabric similar to her dress, or the brides dress - on two sides of the tub have a thin cut - thread a thick glossy ribbon matching the wedding colors through (you can get wired ribbon which is excellent for this) and tie a top bow - this is your soft handle. Fill the tub with florist foam - you will need to make sure it is jammed in really tight and then fill with the flowers.
My friend had daffodils, white fluffy daisies and lots of soft white heather and greenery. It was really pretty.

Alternatively, and I believe this would look a lot better - and really cost about the same -
use a blue tak - sticky putty - strong tape and secure the margarine tub into a small pretty basket - have the basket painted (spray paint is the easiest) in white or cream (depending on what bride is wearing) or a soft pink / blue / lavendar whatever. Wind pretty ribbon from either side of the basket handle to the top and secure in a beautiful bow. Fill the container with florist foam and fill with beautiful flowers and trailing ivy or whatever flowers the bride has.

Have a look at the jleecreations site below - the flower girl basket is really pretty - it looks like they have weaved silk ribbon around a tub of some sort and made a little handle and added the flowers - simple but really sweet

Any dollar store or thrift store has real, decent small baskets for $1-2. Wrap the handle with a pretty ribbon that matches the color scheme. Do you really want a margarine container at a wedding?

sure just get a thin layer of batting and cover the container. cover that with fabric. attach braided ribbon to hold the container. decorate accordingly.

or spend a couple bucks and buy a basket at the dollar store or goodwill or craft store.

if you're worried about leakage from the floral foam put the margarine container inside a wicker bakset please don't use the margarine container as the basket itself the floral foam is easily cut to fit the margarine container and this way you don't have to worry about fixing a handle onto plastic

Sure, why not? I would recommend covering it in some way. You can use fabric or I've seen lovely baskets made from gallon milk containers covered in crochet.

What are you going to do for a handle?

Come on! A real basket's only a couple bucks at the craft store. A margerine container, even if painted, will be cheap and cheezy.

Okay. Paint it any color you wish, cut a long plastic strip from some other platic iteam, bend it like a handle and attatch it to the butter container, and paint the whole thing. GoodLuck!
