I'm surprised at the answers that have been posted. The clubs listed, especially On Broadway, is where I go when I just want to grunge it. These are typical clubs that will have lots of kids with fake IDs, you can get into the VIP with an email, lots of low class people (by low class I mean rude, there will be fights, and lots of "hey baby" by the men/boys). On a night when you don't feel like getting dressed up, don't have to entertain guest, or are not looking for a suitor these are the places to go. I go at least once a month but they are what they are.

If you're looking for something "dressy and nicer" I have a few suggestions you should like!

There's Eden located at the Ivy hotel.

The Ivy Hotel's new rooftop cabana bar and poolside lounge is the best outdoor addition to summer nights in San Diego. Downtown. They also host Envy club and that's pretty sultry to!

JBar located at Hotel Solamar
http://www.hotelsolamar.com/sol_dining.html
Hotel Solamar's fourth floor deck is a tropical getaway with fire pits, lanterns, and flowing palms adorning the cabana bar and poolside lounge.

Altitude Sky Bar
http://www.altitudeskybar.com/
Altitude is a true sky bar, sitting mid-air on the 22nd floor. To cool down, take a straight-shot glance into Petco Park's home field. I LOVE this bar. It's always getting great reviews about best in the states and world. Tons of awards.

and Beach Bar at the W Hotel
http://www.discoversd.com/hotels/w-hotel/594.html
This is where the starts usually stay when they come in town. The W Hotel reinvents summer nightlife with the incredibly upscale Beach Bar. This is no sea-side dive; Beach Bar sits atop the W's third-floor showcasing a rooftop sand stage with white cabanas and chic swimwear-clad patrons.

I hope this helps you find what you're looking for. Again there's nothing WRONG with the clubs mentioned I go there to, but if you're looking for upscale this is where you should go.

Hope this helps! :)

there are a lot of good places in san diego to go to a club. but some of the nicer ones suck. it all depends on if u you are into dancing and what not. i work for a company that is out in bars/clubs all the time promoting our drinks. but from what i have been to out of the dressy kind of clubs i would have to say stingaree, on broadway. but for nicer clubs that are fun to go to i enjoy the best, wiskey girl, xaviers, deco's, and maloney's. the list goes on and on. hope this helps out and have a wonderful day!
