Yeah you do get a taste. But it depends on the person as to how effective the punishment is. Also it depends on the prison. County jail is NOT the same as a more permanent prison environment. I did 10 days in a county jail and also am a combat veteran and I would take county over the US Army any day, strange but true! However, I have friends who are employed by both Federal and State Correctional facilities who have let me tour the grounds and there is no way this side of hell that I'd want to be in either for too long!

It depends on the person and the crime. If a person is going to jail for the first time ever it could probably be a big wake up call. Once you've been there a couple of times you start to realize that 1 day or even a couple days is nothing.

It only takes 5 or 10 minutes in jail for someone to asspound you. And they say, jail is worse than prison because there's less supervision and structure in Jail. For example, in most jails you will not be treated for addictions but in prison you will be. So yeah, a night in jail can be plenty for most people. Now to your basic street thug, it's like a trip to the library where he can join up with friends and brag about it when he gets out. It's like attending a course to get continuing education credits.

If you have ever been to jail, you don't want to go back. Some are worse than others. Our local jail houses 12 to a large cell with one toilet in the middle of the room. No privacy.

Not that I have been incarcerated (I am a defense attorney), but have seen many jails.

You don't want to be there ever.

Well--you could be killed in that one day in the pokey! They have lunatics and killers right there in the general population with the first time joy rider, so oh yeah you get a taste!

Maybe if your lucky and its Friday night when they are bringing in all the trash off the streets. Drunks screaming and kicking the wall. Guys that want to just talk up a storm and all you want to do is finish out your crappy traffic ticket. Thou if it was not for the cells filling up with them, i guess I would have to of had served one more day for that ticket.

When you have to spend 24 hours in jail for owning a small amount of Pot its too much punishment in my opinion.

It's enough to set a lot of people straight- especially since you don't know it's just one day until after you've been arraigned and tried.
