Unless you have a certified assistant dog, NO you cannot legally take your dog into Wal-Mart. Just because OTHER people do it does not make it legal. I personally find it highly annoying to see people with their dogs in the shopping carts. And yes, I am a dog lover!!
As far as Wal-Mart is concerned ... don't get me started. But they probably are too busy not properly staffing their store to notice you have a dog.

I'm sure the sign on the door says "Seeing eye dogs only". And If the store sells groceries or has a cafe - which most do - then dogs are not allowed due to health regulations. Besides - dogs don't belong in a purse. It's a DOG - not an accessory.

I work at Wal-Mart. According to our policies, no, unless the animal you bring in is a service animal, then it is not allowed due to the fact that animals are not supposed to be allowed in areas where food is prepared. However, as an associate all I am allowed to ask if you have an animal with you, is, "Is this a service animal?" Or I can politely tell you, "Only service animals are allowed to accomapany their owners in the store." If you say that the animal is a service animal, then I can not say anything further. I often tell people that when they come in with their dogs, because I like the dogs. I always tell them, "If anyone asks, this is your service animal." And then I play with the doggies! :D
Also, I can not find anything about it, but one of my managers stopped a customer once. She showed him something, a law, I don't know, but it talked about companion animals being allowed....I don't know. I tried to find it after he told me about that, but I couldn't.

You may want to call and ask. I always thought my local Wal-Mart only allowed service dogs, but one time I saw someone bring in a Weimaraner puppy. They carried it through the store, so they may have allowed them to bring the puppy in, but I'm not sure.

I don't know what Walmart's policy is about dogs, but you should ask them. Many stores will say yes if they are asked. The Bed and Bath store near me lets me bring my 65 pound lab inside. Hardware stores almost all let you. I think most stores would let you bring in a small dog in a purse though. I mean, it could hardly bother anyone in a purse.

Joe C, you carry a small dog in your purse?
I'm guessing that draws some uneasy looks. Don't see a lot of the fellas with the Paris Hilton pet accessory look going these days, or ever. But whatever's clever trevor.
This is the only method I could concieve of that might work for you.

Just put on some dark sunglasses and assume the role.

Legally, only service dogs are allowed in such places, tho I have seen a few people bring the dogs in, but I'm guessing they weren't noticed by workers or the workers that did see them didn't hassle with it, but if someone did complain you would be made to take your dog outside pronto, which could mean having to leave it in a hot car or just skipping your shopping & go back home to drop off the dog.
