I suggest just being careful with your words. Tell him, " You are really great and I'd like to get to know you as a friend. I am not interested in dating right now. But thank you so much for the invite".
.Leave it at that. IF he continues to persist, you can say things a little more firm to him so that he gets the hint, such as "I'm sorry that you misunderstood me. I'm not interested in going out with you right now. I hope we can continue to get to know each other as friends". Hopefully, he'll get it.
Lots of luck!

Tell him, "You know, both of us are fine people, but I can't see us together that way."
That's all you have to say. He will probably ask for more specific reasons, but *don't give them to him*! If you give him reasons, he will try to "fix" himself and keep coming back. Or it'd just hurt him.
Also, be firm. Don't let 'no' turn into 'maybe' just to spare his feelings. Years ago, I let 'no' turn into 'maybe', which turned into 'okay'--just so I wouldn't hurt him. And I ended up with a boyfriend that I didn't even really want to date for 2.5 years!
