just like time has an AD and a BC, for the Christian, there comes a point were you put aside the old and put on the new. One of the things I notice is that your vocabulary changes. The word "used to" is prevelant and its used to refer to the old self. 1 Cor 5:17 says that "if anyone is in Christ he is a new creation". Its the new man that being born is reffered to.

As to our old selves, Paul says "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live" (Gal 2:20). The old is gone and the new has come.

In John 3:3, Jesus explains this to mean that we must be BORN of the spirit of God. This is what will happen after the return of Jesus to reign on the earth, and the saints are resurrected to eternal life. That is when the saints will BE spirit, and no longer flesh and blood.

The phrase is also used of people when they become Christian and the spirit of God begins to dwell in them after baptism. But since they do not fit Jesus' description of those who are BORN of the spirit -- that they cannot be seen -- it must mean something else.

The Greek word used (gennao) can have more than one meaning, and it depends on context. In this sense, it can either mean BORN or BEGOTTEN. The context in John 3 is clearly of the change from mortal flesh to immortal spirit, and therefore, BORN is the correct understanding. In the context of having received the holy spirit, though we are still in the flesh (such as John 1:12-13 & 1 John 2:29), it is BEGOTTEN.

So, in English, it would be incorrect for a Christian to say they ARE born again. Rather, it would be better to say, we are begotten again, begotten from above, or begotten of God.

A "born again" Christian is one who has been born into the kingdom of God. It is a spiritual birth.......just as being born into this world is a physical birth.

We become God's children in this birth .....just as we became physical children of our parents.

John 3:3-15
3 In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again."

4 "How can a man be born when he is old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb to be born!"

5 Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.' 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit."

9 "How can this be?" Nicodemus asked.

10 "You are Israel's teacher," said Jesus, "and do you not understand these things? 11 I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven-the Son of Man. 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.

1 Peter 1:22-23

22 Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart. 23 For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.

It is a fanatical sect of people that are based in mostly charasmatic churches of Christianity. They believe that they are born again in the sense that the old life they were living has been washed away through the blood of Christ. And that apon accepting Christ as their personal savior they will live to enjoy eternal life in heaven.

Getting Saved, is an Actual Spiritual RECREATION of your Spirit.

You are a Spirit.
You Live in a Body.

Adam messed up his Spirit and Passed it Down to EveryBody Else.
That messed up Spirit is what Keeps you Out of Heaven.
Gotta get that Thing Born-Again.
Recreated.
So you can go to Heaven when it is All Over!!!

After hearing the word of God ,and accepting Jesus as your savior ,you get a brand new resurrected soul that wants to do the will of God, but you still have a earthly body that lust after sin .2 Corinthians 5:17 " Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new ".

It means born of the spirit. Just as Jesus said, that which is born of the flesh is flesh (our natural birth) and that which is born of the spirit is spirit (accepting Christ as Lord and repenting of our sins).
