Three phases:
6 to 8 months on forming up units, leave, individual training as focus.
6 to 8 months intensive unit level training to get all of the qualifications so that the unit can become a Special Operations Capable Marine Expeditionary Unit. Mountain warfare stuff, urban warfare until you puke (mout), train train train.
6 to 8 months on amphibious assault ships forward deployed in areas at the discretion of the national command authority. During this period of deployment these Marines will interact with the militaries and civilians of allied and nonalligned nations. They answer the phone when the President dials 911. The Navy will drive their ships to the part of the seas that the President and his advisors beleive to be the hottest spots where it is most likely that tthe President will want to unleash his Devil Dogs upon his or her unfortunate enemies. The Marines are tasked with being able to strike within six hours of this directive. In order to acheive this type of operational speed the Marines are a very decentralized organization and every Marine must be a rifleman first. The advantages of being able to put your 'projected forces' on the seas are (but not limited to): nobody owns the sea so you don't have to fool around negotiating with countries to let use use their land (like Turkey wouldn't let us use their land to launch a push to Baghdad from the north), 75% of the world's population and 80% of the world's capitols are within stiking distance from the ocean, if the hot spot changes you can just tell the Navy and they have ppl who know how to navigate to the ships to the new hotspot -- you don't have to screw around loading and unload airplanes all the time.

training, training, sometimes in some locations a little
civic assistance. That won't last long though peace never
lasts very long with all the leadership we have around
the world pumping up their chests.

Constant training and refining of their military skills. And, despite all the sudden burst of agonizing over deaths in the military, there were 9,555 active duty deaths in all branches between 1980 and 1984 when no one was shooting at us.

I guess just training. But, usually there's war. That's not a good thing, but it is reality, especially with all the terrorists.

We have military bases in other countries in which we are not fighting. They protect those bases "just in case" they need to get somewhere quickly. They will still have to work out daily, and will still have jobs they need to do. They keep themselves ready.
