What determines your "rank" in the navy? Is it based on your ASVAB scores, or on how well you did in training. I'm just curious. Thanks in advance.

Your rank is based upon several things -

- Your initial rank depends upon your ASVAB and any college or experience you may already have.
- At lower ranks, advancement is based upon time in grade and evaluations.
- After about E-4, you compete with others in your field to get the top slots, which are limited. Once you have enough time in your current rank, you can take the advancement exam - You also need good evals, there are some college requirements, etc., etc. Sea duty also starts to count.
- Once you go up for chief, there is a board, testing, evaluations, etc. It gets tougher with each successive rank.

Officer ranks are different - you get commissioned after you finish college, then you get advanced based upon performance, time in grade, college classes, sea duty, etc.

ASVAB scores determine which rates and programs you are eligible for. Many programs do have early promotions to certain paygrades. I left boot camp has an E-3 (with back pay from the start of boot) and made E-4 within 3 months. Most sailors left boot at E-1/E-2 and had to work up from there.

Advancement is based on: time in rate/paygrade, time in service, evaluations, and rating test scores. Some rates have many openings for advancement, some are closed.

Bob A: 137 multiple for advancement? I wish mine was that low. I made MM1 with a 238 multiple, missed by a point the exam cycle before that.

ASVAB helps determine which rate you qualify for. Rank is determined by Time in Service, Time in current Rank, Test scores and Evals rolled up into a formula.

Example.. If you have been an E4 for 3 years, been in the miltary for 6 years, have 3.8 (out of 4.0) evals, and score an 80 on your advancement test. Your final score may be a 137.. if the cutoff is above 137..you don't get promoted.

are you asking rate, or rank? rank is paygrade, which is determined by time in service and any special considerations like college credits upon initial enlistment. your RATE is determined by not only yorur ASVAB line scores, but also other factors, such as being color blind or ability to get a Clearance.

Boot Camp Honor Grads may be meritoriously advanced one paygrade(up to E3) upon graduation.
