First off, I live in Tunisia, so I don't have access to all the fancy bedding available for pets. I need something basic.

I have 2 guinea pigs. I bought a starter kit (cage, bedding, food) when I was in the US over the summer. I had to change their bedding because it was dirty and definitely time to be changed. I couldn't find the same type of bedding for them that came with their cage, so we are using hay. Only problem is that since I put they hay in with them, they smell! Is there anything else that I can use as bedding that will not smell? My husband said that if I can't find a solution for the smell he is going to get rid of them, and my son is absolutely heartbroken over the thought of losing them!

Also, I can't buy anything over the internet because credit cards here are limited to use only in Tunisia.

I keep my guinea pigs outside on the balcony during the day so they can breathe fresh air and get sunshine. They are only inside at night, but even now even my balcony smells because of them!

Can you find either wood chips/shavings that are not from a wood that had a strong odor (like cedar or pine) or shredded paper (hopefully not printed with inks that have lead in them) either of these can be used for bedding.
