Do not worry too much about learning, what is important is that he enjoys the toy without some old person (ie us parents) hanging around fussung about spelling/counting etc.
I have seen so much fun being destroyed by parents trying to make every occaision a learning experience.
If he grows up happy and able to interact with the people around him he will be in good shape when he goes to school. The fact that he has short attention may be because he is smart already.

simple building blocks are one of the BEST learning toys available. Through playing with blocks young children work on motor skills, cause and effect, spatial awareness, visual perception, hand eye coordination, sorting, estimation, and develop better memory, concentration, and attention span. Blocks are also open ended toys which can be played with in many ways stimulating imagination and creativity. Blocks help children learn about balance and gravity, and also cooperation and social skills when building with a friend. They also help children develop cognitively as they are able to use blocks to represent other things, and help the child transition from concrete thought to symbolic thought. Blocks aside, the best toys you can give a child are toys that are open ended and can be used and played with in more than one way. children will learn and explore and not get "bored" with open ended toys the way they might with toys that can only be used in a few specific ways. Its great you are looking for "good" toys for your little boy.

YOU are his greatest learning toy!! Find something you enjoy and get down and play with him. Read to him! Even if you just point out colors and objects he will be learning with every page. If you play with a ball and roll it between the two of you he will be learning how to play with others and his motor skills will improve. Stack blocks and talk about the colors and pictures on each one as you go. Keep things colorful and fun and he will be just as smart and attentive as any other boy his age. Good Luck and Have FUN!!!

I would get lots of blocks that are simple to use and not too big, balls are good for playing with large muscles, trucks and cars are good for they help to build the imagination and that allows help with speech skills, Books are a good thing since you can read to them and they can look at the pictures, puzzles as you said, those stacking cups, legos for his age,....there are all kinds of things you can do with him just look at a toy store where it is specialized like Toys R Us.....I work in a preschool and that is the kinds of things we use...I discourage a lot of the electronic toys for they do not enhance a child's mind as well as the toys mentioned above.

Leap Frog has great toys for kids from infants to grade school age. My son jsut turned 3 and we bought him the Leap Frog toy that tells them how to pronounce the letters. It sings the alphabet and my son will sit there for a long time and sing along with it. It had magnetic letters that snap into the main tray and they can also be used on the fridge.

what about those wooden boards where letters and numbers are carved out and the child has to fit the correct number and letter into the correct space.
Memory is always good, and you can play with as many or as few cards. Animal mamas and babies are cute when he gets older.
