Most medications are safe to take while breastfeeding. For pain meds check out this chart (easy cheat sheet)

For other meds you can check here

Kellymom uses Dr Hale's information for her charts. He is THE go to person when it comes to bfing and medications.

ETA- please don't supplement just because you take a medication. Especially at one week, you'd be putting your supply in danger and risking nipple preference. Check it with Hale!

Some of the analgesics or pain-killers can be excreted in breast milk, which may harm the baby on breastfeeding with such breastmilk containing the excreted medication. It is universally accepted that paracetamol or tynelol, as it is commercially known, is safe for headache or any other mild aches, if taken for short periods. It is in the best interests of the baby to avoid most of the strong pain-killing drugs, which are potentially excreted or secreted in breast milk. If one has compulsions for taking a particular drug or medication, supposed to be having adverse effects on infants, with no other safe alternative medications available in its place, then it is better to withhold breastfeeding the baby for a short term as the course of such medication may be of shorter duration. In such cases, the baby may be fed with alternative baby food supplements for a period when breastfeeding is being suspended, and it can be safely resumed once the medication is stopped after completion of its prescribed duration of treatment.

Call your doctors office and ask. Some medications, while normally perfectly safe, aren't safe only a week after birth.

Your milk consists of anything/everything you eat or drink. Medication included.

I was told anything by tylenol was ok with my first kid. I really haven't taken anything but plain old Tylenol for fever since the other two were born!
