I did it once, I'm glad I did it...
After 6PM, you're in there with the crowd for the next 6 hours. Let's just say not recommended to wear a nice pair of pants or shoes.
Unless you know someone who's a cop or works in Midtown, getting in past the barricades past 6 is impossible. My brother worked in Midtown and we got in the crowd after having a few drinks, watched the ball drop, and then headed out.
Most of the people there aren't from NYC. It's almost all tourists. They're really cool and fun to watch, but you can get the rowdy and drunk out there. Cops will be more happy to get them out of there for you.
All the restaurants with window seats are booked, but when I went into Bubba Gumps it looked like it had a great view, and wasn't THAT expensive considering where you're at. Mariott Marquis is the most popular and def. expensive.
Not sure how people get into MTV studios on New Years. Also a great view.
Don't expect to hit a bar after the ball drops unless you made a reservation. They're ALL packed.

It's only really worth it if you can somehow get a hotel in Times Square...that way you don't have to fight the crowds to get out of there. I've done it twice - once with a hotel and once without...With the hotel, you just go down to the street when you decide you want to hang out, wait for the ball to drop and then work your way back to the hotel. The time without the crowd pushed so bad going to the subway, I was actually lifted off my feet and carried about 10 feet just from being packed in. Scary stuff. I wouldn't do it again unless I had a hotel nearby. But it is an awesome experience.

I went last year, and I'm local to NYC. My group first had a big lunch at the ESPN Zone (we were there when it first opened).
Then we stood around Times Square watching traffic go by. They finally closed the road around five and allowed us to enter the streets. Then it was an hour of nothing. Then the party began with the bands.
Longest day of my life. I was glad when the ball dropped so I could walk stiffly to Penn Station to catch the ball drop. Your best bet is to find a celebration local to where you live. Ill never do it again.

There area always parties in the hotels in Times Square. In the Marriot, the Sherton, there are parties. As well as the Holiday Inn on 57th Street. If not go to Greenwich Village on Bleecker Street or McDougal Street. You'll find an ongoing party.

dont waste your time. You have to get there after lunch and then stand around outside for 10 hours. Its very crowded and there arent any bathrooms. And once the ball drops the NYPD gets everyone out of the area on about 45 minutes so you have to find somewhere else to go anyway.

it is worth it but pretty hectic. i was able to see it but from a roof because my friend's husband worked in a building in times square and they had a party. if you go just remember that to have a good view you gotta be there very very early. and remember you are going to be standing up for many hours so if you up for that then go right ahead and enjoy.

if you like insanity, crowds then times square in ny on new years eve is for you. if you rather a more tranquil place you may opt for a more romantic, quiet setting.
