I always wanted to be a doctor but I started thinking about going to annapolis and joining the navy after that. Doctors make more money though and that would be good. I would want to join the navy to travel or I would want to fly jets and fight. The only problem is how much money I woud make in the navy.

You should think about apllying during your senior year of college for the Health Proffessions Scholorship Program. The Navy will then pick up the tab for med school and then you have a service obligation of 4 years active duty and 4 years in the reserve (or you can continue in active duty). After med school you will be promoted to 0-3. You'll have to do one year of GMO (General Medical Officer) and then you will be able to do a residency. You have to remember that you will be getting paid BETTER as a resident in the Navy than on the civilian sector so that can sort of ease the gap on the money issue. Plus the Navy takes good care of its sailors, not quite as good as the Airforce but certainely better than the Army or Marines (Dad was in the Army). I'm in the same position as you, I'm deciding between becoming a doctor or a Surface Warfare Officer, but good luck and I don't think you could go wrong either way.

I used to have a friend who had the letters Adm. before his name and M.D after. He didn't make doctor money during his Navy years, but he also didn't have med-school debt.

He retired from the Navy with a nice pension, and some serious money making potential in the private sector (he'd managed a Navy hospital).

Yes it would. My husband is in the navy to be a Doctor. Corps school in 14 weeks long. He loves it. When you do your first enlistment of 5 years of active duty, you can get out and get any job you want at any hospital because you have military tranning.

not all Dr's make a lot of money it all depends on what you specialize in and what metropolitan area you live in. but the Armed Forces Health Professionals Scholarship Program provides almost $200K for medical training with a period of at 3 years of active duty after that.

making a lot of money is easy, it's how much time you have after work that makes the difference. if you don't have the time to enjoy it what's the point?
